Phil Baker has extensive international experience in design, manufacturing and business development. He established relationships with companies in the Far East in order to implement new product development strategies for Apple Computer, Seiko Instruments, Polaroid, Think Outside and others. He also initiated and successfully completed development, manufacturing and business relations with many other companies, including Sigma, Olympus, Ricoh, Nikon, Hitachi, Sanyo, Pioneer, Mamiya, GEHK, Asahi Pentax, Sunpak, Inventec, GVC, Acer, Quanta Computer, Seiko Epson, Kyocera, Panasonic, Sharp, V-Tech and Nam Tai.

  • Staffed and managed all operational activities, including sales, marketing, finance, operations and engineering.
  • Developed marketing distribution arrangements with Palm Computing, Sony Electronics, Kyocera, Targus International, Fellowes and others.

  • Selected and managed Apple's first Taiwan development/manufacturing partners—Inventec and Quanta.
  • Set up and managed an Apple engineering and business office in Taiwan.
  • Managed the development of the first successful PowerPC Powerbook (Model 1400).
  • Managed the development of the second generation Newton; managed a cross-functional 20-member team in the US and Taiwan, exceeding all goals for schedule, cost and functionality.

  • Created and staffed the first US product development organization for consumer and computer products.
  • Licensed the technology and led the development of the Smart Label Printers and application software utilizing joint development teams in the US, Japan and Hong Kong, with product revenues exceeding $30M/yr.
  • Led the development of Seiko's first color Postscript thermal transfer printer.
  • Developed product concepts for the Seiko handheld category, including organizers, PDAs, dictionaries and other devices.

Sr. Product Manager, Group Engineer, Manager of Quality Assurance

  • Managed business and development activities of Polaroid's first acquisition, Image Resource, Inc.
  • Managed all business products in Japan, including copiers, professional cameras and lenses.
  • Conceived and managed the development of 8 products in 4 years, providing revenues of $400M: Slide Copiers, SX-70 Microscope camera, driver's license camera, Model 600E pro camera.
  • Responsible for systems performance and manufacturing transfer of the famous SX-70 camera.
  • Developed a patented optical focusing system for SX-70 camera with Dr. Edwin Land as co-patent holder.
  • Design team member on creation of Polaroid's first low-cost color cameras (Colorpack), which sold at a rate of 5,000/day, with revenues of $320M/yr.
  • Collaborated with Ansel Adams on development of new product concepts.
